Anisotropy of photon production: initial eccentricity or magnetic field    [PDF]

Adam Bzdak, Vladimir Skokov
Recent measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of direct photons in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies showed that it is of the same order as the hadronic one. This appears to be in a contradiction with expected dominance of photon production from quark gluon plasma at early stage of a heavy-ion collision. A possible explanation of the strong azimuthal anisotropy of photons was put forward in recent articles and is based on the presence of a large magnetic field in the early stage of a collision. In this letter, we propose a method for experimental measurements that can test to what degree the magnetic field in heavy-ion collisions is responsible for the observed anisotropy of photon production.
